The Papakha, Georgia's Traditional Hat

The papakha is the traditional fur hat of the Caucasus. It is made from sheepskin or goat fur, and the wool is left long, so no two papakha hats look quite the same. If you are looking for a Georgian hat with real history behind it, this is the one to know.

In Georgia the papakha belongs to the highland regions of Tusheti, Pshavi and Khevi, where it is worn together with the chokha coat. The Georgian word for it is ფაფახი, written in Latin letters as papakhi.

Every papakha on this site is made by hand in Georgia by our master craftsman, who has been making them since 2010. For years our hats were sold in shops across Georgia. Today we sell them directly from Tbilisi: you can order a papakha hat from us wherever you live, or see the hats in Tbilisi by appointment.

We work only with natural sheepskin and goat fur. Apart from the black goat fur papakha, which is dyed, every hat in the collection keeps the natural colour of its wool or fur. That is why the white, brown and black hats above each look a little different from one another.

Choosing the right size is simple: all our papakhas fit head sizes 58–63 cm. That leaves the choice to the part that matters, the fur, the colour and the shape you like best.
